About the Speaker
Viviane Reding is a Luxembourg politician, currently serving as European Commissioner for Information Society and Media. Before starting a professional career as a journalist for the leading newspaper in Luxembourg, the Luxemburger Wort, she obtained a doctorate in human sciences at the Sorbonne. From 1986 to 1998, she was President of the Luxembourg Union of Journalists. She served 10 years as a Member of the Luxembourg Parliament (1979-1989) and another 10 years as a Member of the European Parliament (1989-1999). In 1999, she was appointed the EU Commissioner for Culture, Youth, Media and Sport. In 2004, she was appointed to her current role as EU Commissioner for Information Society and Media.
Commissioner Reding has been instrumental in key EU initiatives such as on controlling EU mobile roaming charges, the new AVMS (Audiovisual Media Services) Directive, on proposals to allow mobile telephone usage on aircraft and to develop mobile TV services.Errors have been highlighted below.
