FCA Lunch with Tan Sri Dato Francis Yeoh, Managing Director of YTL Group
Almost seven years after the global economic crisis, are we doing any better? While the Federal Reserve and Bank of England have been pumping money into the economy in a bid to stimulate output and employment, there is an evident lack of investments that spur real demand and create real jobs. Artificially low interest rates and excessive liquidity only increases opportunities for investment in bad projects, resulting in long-term stagnation to the economy coupled by lower growth and fewer jobs. What can Asia learn from the recessionary pitfalls of the West?

FCA Morning Talks: Brand Singapore
As it reinvents itself once more, Singapore can claim to be Asia's leading global city - at least for now. But can the latest nation branding efforts emerge, once and for all, from the "wrapper" of old preconceptions of restrained creativity? What makes the Republic tick in shaping its image? What new challenges await, as this "City in a Garden" beats off relentless international competition for talent and investments? Author (and foremer FCA member) Koh Buck Song will address these questions around his new book Brand Singapore, the first independent analysis and critique of Singapore's country brand, and his 17th book as author and editor. Koh has worked on Singapore's nation branding for over 20 years - including as brand consultant to the government in international marketing and enhancing quality of life, on many citizen committees including as Deputy Chairman, Censorship Review Committee 2009-2010, and Board member of the National Arts Council and Media Development Authority. A master's graduate in public administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, he has taught leadership as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, and media policy at the Singapore Management University.

FCA Breakfast Talk with author Giles Chance
Did China cause the credit crisis? China's accession to the WTO in 2001 set in motion a huge upheaval in the world economy and underpinned a global economic boom. Surging Chinese exports of consumer products brought lower prices to Western consumers and larger profits to multinationals, turning China into the largest financer of the developed world, while massive Chinese buying of commodities promoted strong growth in many commodity-rich but less-developed countries. However, China's emergence also helped create the conditions for the debt excesses which caused the crash of 2008. In hindsight, if financial policymakers had better understood the nature and extent of the shock brought by China to the world economy, more appropriate policies might have been put in place which could have mitigated the crash - or even avoided it.

FCA Lunch: Bernard KOUCHNER, French Minister of Foreign & European Affairs
Bernard KOUCHNER, French Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, will dine with, and speak to the Foreign Correspondents Association of Singapore on Monday, 29 October from 1215pm-1400. After lunch he will take media questions. It will likely be an engaging and informative afternoon with Minister Kouchner. This event is part of his official stop in Singapore, during which he'll talk with local government officials. Due to his tight time schedule, this will be the only opportunity for most Singapore-based media to meet with him and ask questions. Minister Kouchner - who is also holds a Doctor of Medicine - has held many Ministerial portfolios over the years. Briefly, he was the senior civil servant and United Nations Secretary-Generals Special Representative for Kosovo (1999-2001), Founder (1980) of Mdecins du Monde [non-profit organization whose members provide medical care in the third world], co-founder and president of Mdecins sans Frontires and has led humanitarian missions to help victims in most of the major natural and industrial disasters and political crises since 1968. Minister Kouchner is also an outspoken diplomat on the issue of the recent crackdown against pro-democracy marches in Myanmar. See IHT article below: International Herald Tribune Keeping the momentum on Burma By Bernard Kouchner and David Miliband 14 October 2007 The world has reacted with horror to the Burmese regimes brutal crackdown against its own people. Monks, nuns and ordinary citizens took to the streets peacefully in protest at the deterioration of the economic situation in the country. They were met with guns and batons. We cannot know for sure the number of those who were killed, but it is likely to be many more than the regime is willing to admit. The whereabouts and welfare of many who have been detained remain uncertain. Meanwhile, the persecution continues: the security forces carry out new raids and new arrests every night. It is vital that international pressure on the Burmese regime is maintained. The generals may have hoped that by shutting off the Internet and targeting the media they could hide their crimes from the eyes of the world. If so, they have failed. This horrific repression has provoked disgust and anger across the globe. The immediate priority is to end the violence and secure the release of all of the political detainees. At the same time, it is vital that the regime works urgently with the UN special envoy, Ibrahim Gambari, to establish a genuine process of national reconciliation. That process will need to be very different from the widely discredited "National Convention Process" over which the regime has labored for many years without winning the confidence of Burmas population. It must involve Aung San Suu Kyi and the leaders of all Burmas political opposition and ethnic groups. And it must have international legitimacy, with the United Nations and Burmas neighbours closely engaged. Everyone who has influence on the Burmese regime must now use it to convince them of this new reality. The generals have now seen a very strong statement by the UN Security Council deploring the violence, calling for the release of all political prisoners and supporting genuine dialogue with all concerned parties and ethnic groups in Burma. The junta will have heard members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations express their revulsion at the recent violence by the security forces. China, as well as joining the Security Council statement, directly supported Gambaris recent visit to Burma. Other neighbours - India and Thailand, for example - can also play a vital role in helping to build a better future for the people of Burma. It is clear that for Asean in particular turning a blind eye to such a repressive government would damage its credibility and jeopardize the whole process of democratization and development of the region. Last month, as the demonstrations grew in intensity, the European Union made it plain that it would not hesitate to impose tougher measures against the regime if it resorted to force against peaceful demonstrators. Sadly, the regime failed to heed this, and many similar, warnings. So Europes foreign ministers will be meeting on Monday to discuss how to toughen up sanctions against the Burmese regime. EU sanctions currently include a travel ban and asset freeze on specific individuals and a ban on commercial dealings with specific state companies with close ties to the regime. On Monday, the European Union will target those sectors from which the regime draws much of its revenue, including timber, precious metals and gems, and will make clear that whether further measures are imposed will depend entirely on the regimes willingness to allow genuine political progress. All the signs point to a regime that feels the pressure. These new measures will help to maintain that pressure by focusing on the business interests of the regime rather than the wider population. The EU must also offer positive incentives for progress. The EU needs to consider a package of positive measures to the Burmese people should the regime show its willingness to genuinely work for reconciliation. In the meantime, we will continue to provide vital humanitarian assistance to the Burmese people in order to alleviate the suffering of the population. EU sanctions, of course, can only be part of a wider process aimed at creating genuine reconciliation in Burma. The key role must be played by the Burmese people themselves, in all their diversity. This will be demanding; Burma, as some scholars have said, is a fragile "unfinished mosaic," with dozens of ethnic minorities, idioms and cultures. Burmas regional partners have understandable concerns that the necessary political changes should not endanger regional stability. So the process must be broad-based and inclusive. And, as Aung San Suu Kyi has said, the military must play an important part in a future democratic Burma. But the military dictatorship must end. The Burmese people have been denied democracy and economic development for 45 years. They have taken to the streets once again and, in the face of horrific violence, demanded a better future. Its high time their leaders responded. (Bernard Kouchner and David Miliband are foreign ministers, respectively, of France and Britain.)

Nine Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are visiting Singapore on Tuesday, 2nd October 2007 to investigate the prospects for a Free Trade Agreement between the EU and ASEAN. They would like to have lunch with members of the FCA to discuss their progress on the FTA and other EU-ASEAN issues. THIS IS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN, FIRST-HAND, OF THEIR PROGRESS. During their two day Singapore visit from 1st to 2nd October 2007 the MEPs will meet with their counterparts from the Singapore Parliament, trade officials and members of the European Chamber of Commerce (EuroCham) to develop their understanding of the issues that will need to be addressed in the FTA negotiations and to hear at first hand a South East Asian perspective on our trade relations. The delegation is being led by Ms Corien Wortmann-Kool, the Committees 1st Vice Chair. The information gathered during the visit will feed into a European Parliament report on trade and economic relations with ASEAN which will be prepared by Glyn Ford, one of the delegation members. Since the breakdown of WTO talks in Seattle in 1999, the European Parliament has devoted increasing effort to developing a parliamentary dimension of trade negotiations, seeing this as a means of ensuring that citizens concerns are transmitted to the trade negotiators and that these negotiators are subject to appropriate democratic scrutiny. The visit and subsequent report form part of this process and reflect the priority the Committee attaches to developing trade relations with this region. Background: The European Parliaments Committee on International Trade was set up following the 2004 elections. It has established an agreement with the European Commission whereby confidential negotiating documents are made available to a limited number of Members and the Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson or one of his senior officials provides regular in camera briefings on the progress of negotiations. In 2007 the Parliaments internal rules were changed to allow Committees to travel outside the EU. The fact that the Trade Committee has chosen Singapore and Vietnam for its first visit of this type shows the importance it attaches to ASEAN and the FTA negotiations. Directions to lunch: Mercury Room, Level 4, Raffles City Convention Center Enter Swissotel Lobby and take the escalators to level 4.

FCA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Foreign Correspondents Associations Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on THURSDAY, May 24 at Harrys Bar, 28 Boat Quay. Registration will begin at 7:00pm with the meeting set to start at 7:30pm and finish no later than 9pm. Finger food and an open bar will be provided during the AGM. The AGM is the best opportunity for members to discuss past activities, the priorities for the year ahead and of course, vote for FCA officers. While only ordinary members have voting rights, associate members are strongly encouraged to attend and participate in discussions. There were fewer events in the last year, but the events that were organized remained high quality, interesting and newsworthy with strong guest speakers such as Mr Anwar Ibrahim and Dr Vivien Balakrishnan. I am proud that the FCA has grown from strength to strength, with membership rising 49 percent over the last three years, breaking back above the 200-strong level (the FCA currently has 205 members). Our reserves have also increased significantly, thanks to the increased membership as well as the committees efforts to reach out to sponsors for our most prestigious events. Having been President of this organisation since 2004 and having previously also spent two years on the Committee, it is my intention to step down at the AGM and give someone else the opportunity to take this organization forward. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people that have served on the FCA Committee over the last three years, generously volunteering their time, in particular, my Vice-President Manfred Rist who has been a source of great support and ideas, as well as Justin Wood who has served as Secretary and is the current FCA Treasurer. Several Committee members have also indicated their intention to step down this year. This organization is run by members for members and everybody has a role to play; I would urge you all to seriously consider serving on the Committee and running for office. Contact me if you have any queries on what the various positions entail. Details of the agenda, the minutes for last years AGM, proxy form to vote (for use if you are unable to attend the AGM) wase sent to all members. Contact the secretariat if you did not get these. I hope many of you can come to this important meeting and show your support to the volunteers who run this organisation. Regards, Sonia Kolesnikov-Jessop FCA PRESIDENT

Lunch with Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports
Dear Members, The government's tight media control is increasingly being challenged by the rise of alternative media especially on the Internet. From independent blogs to large-media websites, how can the government navigate the age of the Internet, balancing media controls with the desires of an increasingly sophisticated and cynical population? The government says it wants to encourage more debate; is this just lip service to the younger generations or is there a genuine attempt to engage the post-65 electorate? How far can bloggers go? Are bloggers re-defining OB markers? Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Second Minister for MICA, has agreed to address the FCA on Thurs, Mar 22 on the topic of 'Navigating the Age of the Internet, Singapore and the New Media." There will be a Q&A session on the record. The former ophthalmologist and medical director of the Singapore National Eye Centre entered politics in 2001 and is the MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC. Dr Balakrishman is also the Chairman of Young PAP. I hope many of you can join us for this session with the Minister. Regards Sonia Kolesnikov-Jessop FCA President

Lunch with ABN AMRO on private banking
Wealth transfer and inheritance in Asian families : Generations on a collision path. Family enterprise is big business in Asia. In Hong Kong alone, family firms constitute almost 40% of the Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Index. Yet their contribution to the economy is often short lived; in general only three in ten family businesses survive into the second generation and a mere one in ten into the third. With the majority of private wealth creation in Asia being linked to entrepreneurship and family enterprise, succession planning and wealth management are key concerns. In a first-of-its- kind study, ABN AMRO Private Banking, in partnership with INSEAD, a leading international business school, takes a unique look into the emotional aspects that govern high-net-worth families and family businesses in Asia and explores the issues that often lead to their demise. In an environment never more strongly shaped by Western influences, the study identifies stark differences in the values, aspirations, concerns and ideals of some of Asias most successful businessmen and their children. The result: two generations on a collision path as they prepare for the transfer of wealth in a social and business landscape altered over the last two decades. Barend Janssens, Head of ABN AMRO Private Banking for Asia along with guest speaker Professor Randy Carlock, INSEAD, will be present the findings of the study. For JOURNALISTS ONLY

Lunch with documentary director Martyn See
Film-maker Martyn See, whose controversial 26-minute documentary Singapore Rebel was banned here on the grounds that it was a political film, has made yet another film dealing with politics: Zaharis 17 years. The subject of his new 49-minute documentary is left-wing journalist Said Zahari, who was arrested in 1963 for allegedly being a communist and detained without trial for 17 years in Singapore. Prior to his arrest, he had been banished from Malaysia for being a part of a strike involving Malaysian newspaper Utusan Melayu. Mr See will talk about his new film and the reasons why he choose this subject; and more generally his experience with Singapore Rebel. In an interview with Time magazine in December last year, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew said in reference to Singapore Rebel, which chronicles opposition politician Chee Soon Juan's political activities: "Well, if you had asked me, I would have said, to hell with it. But the censor, the enforcer, he will continue until he is told the law has changed. And it will change ... "

Lunch with Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker
At a time when American and European airlines are facing financial difficulties, airlines from the Middle East have become more aggressive. Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker has agreed to discuss with FCA journalists the airlines positioning vs its competitors and how the regions airlines are faring. Both Qatar and Emirates have been expanding aggressively, but according to experts the regions shortages in skilled labour, especially pilots, and a potential moderation in market conditions could make the realisation of growth plans by the airlines more difficult. Qatar Airways was re-launched in 1997 and has since become one of the worlds fastest growing airlines. In June 2003, it signed a US$5.1 billion agreement with Airbus for an additional 34 aircraft, which will allow it to fly with a fleet of 52 Airbus aircraft by the end of 2008. It has also signed a US$1.2 billion deal for two A380 super jumbos which will become the flagships of its fleet when they are delivered in early 2009.

Lunch with Cherian George, Journalism and Technology
Since the mid-1990s, small groups of activists and hobbyists have been going online to engage in a contentious style of journalism. Cherian Georges new book assessing this development, Contentious Journalism and the Internet: Towards Democratic Discourse in Malaysia and Singapore, is released by Singapore University Press this month. He argues that such websites, though unruly and inchoate, have added significantly to media diversity not least by challenging unresolved contradictions within professional mainstream journalism. Based on in-depth case studies of alternative online media in the two countries, Mr. George believes that the democratising power of Internet technology has been overhyped. In contrast, pre-existing, offline social networks and cultural factors play a critical role in the success of these intrepid online ventures. The former Straits Times journalist now an Assistant Professor at the School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University, will talk to the FCA on the subject Friday, Jan 27.

Lunch with human rights lawyer M Ravi
How can a civil rights advocate work within the system? M.Ravi is now considered Singapores leading human rights lawyer. In the last year he defended two death penalty cases, that of Shanmugam Murugesu and Nguyen Tuong Vans. More recently, he was also involved in a controversial case defending the three protesters who had been demonstrating in front of NKF Board. For taking up those cases and trying to explore all legal boundaries, while pushing an anti-death penalty campaign, Ravi has often come under fire, being criticized by other lawyers which called his actions publicity stunts. Ravi has agreed to talk to the FCA about his experience as a human right lawyer in Singapore and the rest of Southeast Asia, working within the system and trying to change it. He is currently involved in Clinical Legal Education programs in Asia in implementing programs relating to the Rule of Law. He is also involved in a project with Afghanistan law students to assist building the legal infrastructure for the civil society there, coinciding with the recent opening of the new parliament. He was also reprimanded for creating a scene at Changi Womens prison after he was denied entry into the prison to see an inmate. Ravi runs his own law firm M.Ravi & Co with a group of Associates and recently launched his second book Hung at Dawn, about the case of Shanmugam.

Fighting Piracy and Counterfeiting: Seminar on Intellectual Property Rights in Asia
The Belgium Luxembourg Business Group, in cooperation with INSEAD and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (NUS), is pleased to invite FCA Members to a breakfast meeting where panel members will discuss the topic of Intellectual Property Rights in Asia Panel: Mr. Paul Vandoren: Visiting Research Scholar Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (NUS) and Former Director Intellectual Property, European Commission, Directorate General Trade Mr. Wong Sheng Kwai, Assistant Director-General Infrastructure Development Division, Intellectual Property Office in Singapore Mr. Jan de Visser, General Manager IP & S, Singapore/Regional - Philips Professor Hellmut Schtte, Dean of Asia Campus, INSEAD Moderator Professor of International Management, INSEAD Piracy and counterfeiting are rampant worldwide, despite the fact that the World Trade Organization imposes all its members to provide in their legislation the minimum standards on enforcement laid down in the TRIPS (Trade related Aspects of Intellectual Property rights) Agreement. There is an increasing concern of rightholders, irrespective whether they are nationals of the countries where the rules are infringed or foreigners, who export to or invest in such countries. Hence, governments are being called upon to take effective measures aimed at combating and eradicating this problem. The losses incurred are massive and the problem is linked with the protection of the consumers, money laundering, drug trafficking and terrorism. All sectors of the economy are affected. Governments and international organizations are stepping up their efforts in order to ensure that adequate action is being taken. Intellectual Property is key to development and to the creation of a global knowledge based society. The lack of enforcement of intellectual property hampers investment and transfer of technology. REGISTRATION: please respond not later than August 11 by email to Bart Bauwens, President of the Belgian-Luxembourg Business Group at blbg@blas.org.sg. The number of seats is restricted and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Lunch with Minister for Foreign Affairs, HE George Yeo
Title: "Singapore's diplomatic role in Asia" US Deputy Secretary of State Robert Zoellick recently commented that whenever he comes to Singapore, he spends much of his time asking questions about the region to senior government officials, valuing their perspectives on what is happening. Singapore's diplomatic touch has often been praised (whether within the U.N. or during the WTO negotiations). Given the current environment, can the country play a bigger role on the Asian diplomatic stage? Should it assert a greater influence within ASEAN and can it help with ASEAN's Myanmar situation? Why is it driving Asia's dialogue with the Middle East? Foreign Minister George Yeo has kindly agreed to address the FCA on the topic of 'Singapore's diplomatic role in Asia." His speech will be followed by an on-the-record Q&A session. A former graduate from Cambridge University and Harvard Business School, Mr. Yeo first joined the military, before entering politics in 1988 as an MP. Throughout his long political career, he has held numerous senior postings, including Minister for Information and the Arts, Minister for Health, and Minister for Trade and Industry. He was also the Chairman of the Young PAP from 1991 to 2000. Media screening of Singapore Gaga
FCA ordinary members are invited to the media screening of Singapore Gaga, a short feature by award-winning director Tan Pin Pin (recently in the news for her letter to the Straits Times) The one-hour long feature will be followed by a Q&A with the director. In the wake of the Singapore Rebel saga, how can Singaporean film-makers express their thoughts about the country they live in without being branded political and subversive? Singapore GaGa is a quirky portrait of Singapore through its music and sounds. It features performances of train announcements ("Eating or drinking is not allowed on the stations and trains"), Madrasah school cheers and local avant garde toy pianist Margaret Leng Tan amongst many others. The film is a tapestry of montages, songs, and cinema verite vignettes lovingly stitched together to give the viewer an idea of what it means to be Singaporean. It played to standing room only screenings at the Singapore International Film Festival earlier this year.

Lunch with Dr. Frank Richter-The Next Challenge for Chinese Business
The Next Challenge for Chinese Business Chinese companies are still under-represented amongst the truly global multinational companies. Notwithstanding their recent international forays including Lenovo's purchase of IBM's PC-business and TCL's merger with Thompson, much of the promise of the Chinese firms leading a Pacific century has yet to be realized. Dr Frank Jrgen Richter, President of HORASIS and the former Director of the World Economic Forum in charge of Asian affairs, will talk about the growing ambitions of Chinese companies to go global and the rising pressures on them to internationalize. HORASIS is a Geneva-based consultancy focusing on long-term scenarios related to corporate globalization and Asian business. Industry change, political shifts and advancements in technology have brought about fundamental changes in the structure of competition, which challenge the traditional strengths of Chinese companies. For those that have grown on the back of national protection and information asymmetries, the environment has become tougher than ever. By profiling leading contemporary globalizers, Dr. Richter will show how Chinese companies can best climb the globalization staircase and develop the strategies and the capabilities needed to succeed in the global future. He will also explore what the internationalization of Chinese firms means for the Western world. Dr Richter is a sought-after speaker who has extensive knowledge and connections throughout the region. I hope many of you can come to what should be a very interesting discussion.

SPC lunch with Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz
The New Face Of Pakistan ATTENTION: NO REGISTRATION THROUGH FCA!!!!! YOU HAVE TO SEND CHEQUE TO SINGAPORE PRESS CLUB SECRETARIAT. DETAILS AT BOTTOM The Singapore Press Club has kindly extended an invitation to all FCA members to attend a talk with Pakistan Prime Minister, Mr Shaukat Aziz, at their member rates. As some of you might know, Mr Aziz spent several years in Singapore during his 30-year career with Citigroup. In November 1999, he was appointed Pakistan's Finance Minister, and in August last year, he took over as his country's Prime Minister. The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is undergoing many changes. The fact that a professional banker was selected to be the country's Finance Minister speaks volumes of the winds of change blowing through the country. Among the many bold steps being taken by its leadership, Pakistan has joined the community of nations to wage a war on terrorism, as it joins the global mainstream. On the economic front, Pakistan is inviting foreign investment -- a step which has encouraged heavyweights like Temasek and SingTel to consider putting their money in the country. SPC Lunch with Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean
The Singapore Press Club has extended this very interesting event to FCA members at their member rates. PLEASE NOTE: Registration is with their secretariat, so DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL as automatically inserted at bottom of this email. Title: Defending Singapore: Strategies for a Small State We all live in a changing world. Security has become the No. 1 concern for all -- be it at the personal, organisational or national level. Globalisation has allowed groups with ill intent to link up, franchise the methods of terrorism, and transfer the necessary technology, funds, expertise and experts across continents. In view of the changed global conditions, governments must now also take very different approaches to enhance security. The new security challenges obviously cannot be adequately dealt with by any one country. A new international security architecture is slowly emerging. All countries, particularly small ones like Singapore, can thrive only in a stable geopolitical environment that is governed by predictable and impartial international norms While small countries expect the big countries to meet their obligations and responsibilities as members of the international community, security of their nation state is of paramount importance to small countries. How does Singapore, one of the smallest among small states, defend itself in the face of these challenges? Come listen to Defence Minister Teo Chee Hean discuss the strategies open to Singapore. Please register early to avoid disappointment. The last two talks --- by MediaCorp Chairman Ho Kwon Ping in January and International Association of Press Clubs' immediate Past President Jim Laurie earlier this month --- were sold out and many members on the waiting list could not join in. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- REGISTRATION Please send payment by cheque payable to Singapore Press Club and mail to: Singapore Press Club, c/o ASCS, 150 Orchard Road #08-10, Orchard Plaza, Singapore 238841 Specify your name, FCA membership number and telephone number

By parking so much money in global reserve currencies, Asian savers have been outsourcing their capital markets to the United States. But there is now a new sense of urgency among regional policy makers to make an Asian bond market a reality. Central banks through the Asian Bond Market Initiative are co-ordinating on how best to diversify out of the dollar. How much progress has been achieved so far and what remains to be done? Will an Asian bond market succeed and what are the pitfalls laying ahead? Well-known analyst Michael Preiss has agreed to address the FCA on the topic of "Time for region to stop outsourcing capital markets to the US" Previously Chief Investment Strategist for CFC Securities, an independent bond trading house. Luncheon talk by Michael Backman
Michael Backman is a best-selling author of several books on East Asia. Last year MITA Minister Lee Boon Yang accused him of crossing Singapore's out of-bounds markers and seeking to interfere in Singapore politics after he had argued for greater media freedom in Singapore. Backman will address the FCA on the urgent need for greater business openness, transparency and the rule of law to create a modern global economy in Singapore. Otherwise, asks Backman, will Singapore become irrelevant, especially in the face of a booming China and a resurgent Malaysia? Among his works, Backman wrote the acclaimed "Asian Eclipse: Exposing the Dark Side of Business in Asia," named by The Economist as one of the finest general non-fiction books published that year, and his just published book, "The Asian Insider," is the second best-selling non-fiction work in Malaysia and the third best-seller in Singapore's Kinokuniya. He is also a newspaper columnist, including the Age in Melbourne and occasional columnist for the Today newspaper in Singapore. He is based in London.

Lunch with Alex Au from People like Us
I'm please to announce that Alex Au from the gay and lesbian group, People Like Us has agreed to address the FCA on the topic of Singapore's "opening up" - substance or hype? A gay activist's view From as far back as the early 1990s, there has been a whole series of government initiatives about promoting civil society, thinking out of the box, "opening up", and most recently, Remaking Singapore. But to what extent has reality matched proclaimed intentions? Alex will recount the experiences of People Like Us in an attempt to gain some insight into the workings of officialdom in this regard. As viewed by a marginalized and still-criminalised community, the much-touted liberalization is in fact built on flimsy foundations, and constrained by a narrow worldview. Alex Au has been a gay activist for over 10 years. In the early years, he ran support groups for gay men. He is one of the signatories of People Like Us, in its 7-year quest to be registered as a society under Singapore law. Alex is also a commentator on Singapores socio-political scene, through his website Yawning Bread.
