FCA ordinary members are invited to the media screening of Singapore Gaga, a short feature by award-winning director Tan Pin Pin (recently in the news for her letter to the Straits Times) The one-hour long feature will be followed by a Q&A with the director. In the wake of the Singapore Rebel saga, how can Singaporean film-makers express their thoughts about the country they live in without being branded political and subversive? Singapore GaGa is a quirky portrait of Singapore through its music and sounds. It features performances of train announcements ("Eating or drinking is not allowed on the stations and trains"), Madrasah school cheers and local avant garde toy pianist Margaret Leng Tan amongst many others. The film is a tapestry of montages, songs, and cinema verite vignettes lovingly stitched together to give the viewer an idea of what it means to be Singaporean. It played to standing room only screenings at the Singapore International Film Festival earlier this year.
