PAKISTAN AFTER MUSHARRAF

How will the surprise resignation this week of Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf -- a longstanding ally in the United States' "war on terror" -- affect the battle against militants in the country's lawless tribal region bordering Afghanistan? With the US and its allies expressing mounting concern over insurgents based in Pakistan's tribal areas, and with bombings elsewhere in Pakistan, Professor Ishtiaq Ahmed offers a briefing on "Background to religious extremism in Pakistan and its role in the country's political turmoil"

Professor Ishtiaq Ahmed is a Pakistani specialist and professor of Political Science at the University of Stockholm. He is currently a visiting senior research fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore and is also visiting Research Professor at the South Asian Studies Programme, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at the National University of Singapore.

He contributes regularly to The News, a widely circulated English-language daily in Pakistan.
